Equilax takes on Sand Colic

Equilax, highly palatable, apple flavoured psyllium pellets, makes preventing sand colic easy. By providing a regular source of Equilax, either in feed or by hand, your horse gets a gentle but effective movement of sand through the gut.

There is no waste with Equilax, as the pellet is not blown away, nor does it shake out of the feed – being so palatable your horse will chase each morsel.

Psyllium is known to be the best feedstuff for the prevention of sand colic. Equilax pellets do not cause a nutritional imbalance (unlike bran) and the small amounts needed make it a cost effective way of preventing colic.

Colic in horses is a common occurrence. There are several types of colic including worm (verminous) colic, mouldy or bad feed colic, grain poisoning colic and the more common sand colic.

Horses will naturally eat sand and dirt during their normal feeding – the majority of the sand will pass through the intestine uneventfully (particularly when the horse is exercised regularly). However, in many horses held in small yards or stables, the sand may build up leading to life threatening colic.

Treating sand colic, once it becomes obvious, is very difficult – there may be 30 – 50 Kgs of compacted sand in a horse’s intestine. Treatments such as paraffin drenches are completely ineffective at shifting this mass of sand. Unless the compacted sand can be softened and made to move the horse is doomed. Regular use of Equilax may help prevent these catastrophes.

Should your horse show signs of colic you need to contact your veterinarian immediately – all colics are potentially life threatening.

A long-term programme to prevent sand colic will include – Equilax pellets twice weekly, regular vigorous exercise, feeding on a mat to reduce the intake of sand and providing the horse with “toys” to prevent boredom.
