Metabolic Bone Disease in Reptiles

MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease) is a problem that is seen very regularly in reptiles, with sun loving lizards seeming to be the most frequent sufferers.

With MBD being one of the most commonly seen problems, it is amazing that in most cases it is also one of the easiest to avoid.

MBD occurs when the calcium blood levels of a reptile drop too low, causing the body to draw needed calcium from the bones. Over long periods of time or in stages when the demand for calcium is increased, MBD can become a serious problem, gravid females and juveniles are particularly at risk.

A regular case we see in our clinic is the Bearded Dragon that is losing weight and has developed strange tics. Most of these reptiles have been fed on insect only diets with minimal or no access to UVB light – this is seriously bad news! An emergency dose of calcium and then education of the keeper will solve most cases, with a full and speedy recovery made by the lizard as soon as their nutritional needs are met. But sadly in some cases the disease is allowed to advance too far, leading to irreparable deformity and all too frequently, the death of the animal.

The key to avoid MBD is simple. Research your animal thoroughly before you purchase and ensure lighting, heating and dietary requirements are met, contact Vetafarm if you need further information.
