D3 a Breakthrough in Cabinet Birds

Vitamin D3 - what do we really know about it as bird keepers? It comes from the sun’s action on skin and aids in absorption of calcium….that’s about it.

Recently Vetafarm was contacted by well known TV/Radio personality and avid budgerigar breeder Don Burke, with information and a proposition that was very interesting. After enduring many problems with his birds in recent years Don had come across new research conducted in the U.S. on Vitamin D3 and its incredible and numerous health benefits that had previously not been considered.

Researching further and joining the problematic dots, Don came to conclusion that his true issues with his birds had begun when he implemented a fully enclosed (but extremely well maintained) breeding room for his birds. This room like many others utilised by breeders around the country was setup to increase hygiene, decrease the spread of disease and overall ensure a better breeding environment for his birds. A problem that was never anticipated was now quite clear to Don; his birds were almost totally devoid of natural sunlight and adequate levels of the essential vitamin D3.

Don has since contacted Dr Tony Gestier at Vetafarm and after time spent formulating and designing a supplement to address this issue, Dr Tony finished and despatched the supplement to Don Burke for trials.

The results reported by Don were not instant, Don had been using this new supplement (Soluvite D) for some time before any improvement to the birds health could be seen, however a year down the track and Dons previous breeding success from the old days is returning in full and still building momentum.
