OTHER INFORMATION: The snake mite (Ophionyssus natricis) is the most commonly observed ectoparasite in general practice.
Mites can appear as red, grey, brown or black depending on the life stage and feeding status.
They are usually found in recessed areas of the body, such as cloacal folds, corners of the mouth and between scales.
Diagnosis of snake mite infestation can be made by carefully examining the reptile and visualising the mites on the skin between the scales
Female Ophionyssus spp. lay batches of eggs (up to 90 in number) off the host, in cracks and crevices of their environment. This is the reason that cleaning of the infested animal’s environment is critical in mite control. The mite eggs develop in the substrate.
